Your Standard Of Love

“A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know you are My disciples, if you love one another.”

John 13: 34-35 NIV

First things first, love is a command. We far too often treat it like just another option. I love who I want to love, hate who rubs me the wrong way. People must earn your respect, they don’t have to earn your love.

Imagine if we had to earn the love of God! Where would we be. What would our lives look like. How would we toil and toil just to earn His love, only to keep on falling short. Because, guess what, there is NOTHING we can do to earn the love of God. It is outside of mine, or your capacity to earn God’s love.

It is evident through the law, when the Word says, ‘Keep ALL my commandments and get ALL my blessings, but if you dont keep ALL my commandments you get ALL my curses.’ And men kept on falling short. Why? You cannot achieve the things of God through the capacity of the flesh. Our flesh is limited.

So God sent one, fully armed with the capacity of heaven, to show us that His standard could only be kept by His strength. Jesus died for us and equipped us with the Holy Spirit, empowering us to live up to His standards.

In the same way, by Godly standards He loved us outside of our deserving it. And commanded us to do the same, love without boundaries, love like He loved, the kind of love that died on the cross for the ones that sent Him to the cross.

“But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be children of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous. If you love those who love you, what reward will you get? Are not even the tax collectors doing that?”

The Standard of God’s love is love that is for all, love that see’s no colour, no tribe, no gender, no age, no religion, to political party. The love of God is for all, for those who wish you well and those who wish wicked on you. That is where change is birthed in the heart of men, you show love without measure to all men, let your love overcome.

When you doubt your capacity to love, look to the love you receive from God, completely unworthy and He pours love out in measures we can not begin to assess.

God’s standard of love is beyond a feeling or emotions, God’s standard of love is actions, lifestyle. God’s love gives to those who are taking from you. God’s love embraces those who hurt you. God’s standard of love withstands hurt to help.

It’s easy to love those who love you, how do you treat those who hurt you, who attacked you when you couldn’t defend yourself, those who speak badly of you and stain your name in places you wish to go. What is your standard of love.
